The Toxicity and Potential Dangers of Aliphatic and Aromatic Hydrocarbons *
نویسنده
چکیده
The aliphatic hydrocarbons play an increasing role as solvents in different industries and the appraisal of the hazards connected with their use offers considerable difficulties because most of these solvents represent mixtures, sometimes of heterogeneous nature, and because their composition is frequently only incompletely known. In order to evaluate the potential dangers of such mixtures it is essential to be familiar with the toxicological and chemical properties of the individual members of such homologous series as the paraffins, olefines, acetylene derivatives, and saturated and unsaturated cycloparaffins. Of these the paraffins, or saturated hydrocarbons of the general formula C.H2.-2, are chemically quite inactive, as is indicated by their inertness towards concentrated sulfuric acid and cold fuming nitric acid, the former allowing their separation from olefines, acetylene derivatives, and aromatic hydrocarbons. The lower homologues of this group, methane, ethane, propane, and butane, are gases under ordinary conditions; those with from 5 to 15 carbons are liquids; the higher members are solids. Their boiling point increases with the molecular weight. The solubility in water of the gaseous members of this series increases from methane to butane and decreases with the higher homologues from pentane to octane. Data on the solubility of the paraffins in oil are rather incomplete and do

Catalytic Pyrolysis of Waste Tyre Rubber into Hydrocarbons Via Base Catalysts
The waste tyres represent a source of energy and valuable hydrocarbon products. Waste tyres were pyrolysed catalytically in a batch reactor under atmospheric pressure. The effects of basic catalysts (MgO and CaCO3) were studied on the pyrolysis products. The distribution ratio of gas, liquid and char with MgO and CaCO3 were 24.4:39.8:35.8 wt % and 32.5:32.2:35.2 wt % r...

Alpha-Hydroxy ketones with an aromatic and aliphatic substituent were prepared with condensation of aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes in the presence of polymer-bound thiazolium salt.
متن کاملThe potential of low temperature extraction method for analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in refined olive and refined pomace olive oils by HPLC/FLD
Background and Objectives: A method was developed and validated for determining 15 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in refined olive and refined pomace olive oils using high performance liquid chromatography coupled with a fluorescence detector. Materials and Methods: The sample preparation involved liquid–liquid extraction with organic solvent and low temperature clean-up. The low temp...
متن کاملDegradation of Hydrocarbons and Lignin-like compounds by Alcaligenes sp. strain 3k isolated from Ilorin
The primary goal of this study was to isolate hydrocarbon-degrading organisms and assess their ability to bioremediate petroleum-contaminated soil and water. Nigeria is one of the major oil producing countries and petroleum contamination is widespread in agricultural soil. Alcaligenes sp. strain 3k was isolated from a kerosene-polluted soil in Ilorin, Nigeria. We also assessed its ability to de...
